Day 19: Skookum Cascadian Brown Ale

The Pacific Northwest in a beer

The Story:
Skookum actually began life as Black Touque, blending rich, black roasted malt with the hop bill of our original IPA.  Back in 2004 when the beer was originally released, Black Touque would have been one of the first brews in North America under what would come to be called the Cascadian Dark Ale category.  But due to the inherent challenges of pronouncing 'touque' properly, we decided to give the label a facelift, alter the recipe slightly, and in 2010 launched the Skookum Cascadian Brown Ale.  Fresh pine bitterness in a deep earthy brown body, Skookum is the Pacific Northwest in a bottle.

Tasting Notes:
Pours a dark caramel colour with a cloud-white head.  Aromas of roasted coffee and caramel malt.  Smooth rounded malt body gives way to slight chocolate which is balanced with a modest bitterness.  Finishes clean and slightly dry.

Availability:
Skookum is available as a permanent member of our Hop Box Mixed Pack.

  1. More hops than your average brown ale, yet not over powering. I found this to only further enhance it's uniqueness and sheer artisan craftsmanship that comes out of Phillips.
